Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What type of league levels does Shakopee Girls Softball Association (SGSA) offer?

The SGSA offers two league levels: Travel and In-House

Travel offers more competitive league games in the South and Southwest metro area. The different levels range from 10U – 18U. Travel teams play doubleheader games two nights a week and weekend tournaments in May, June and July.  Travel also has a Fall league. Please visit the website under the Travel tab for more team information.
In-House has three levels. Mighty Mite (1st & 2nd), Pee Wee (3rd & 4th) and Midgets (5th & 6th). League games/practices are played two nights a week within Community ball fields. Please visit the website under the In-House tab for more team information.

Can I play for both Travel and In-House?

No. Due to the Travel teams scheduling for practices/games, you won’t be able to commit to playing in both leagues.

Do we get uniforms for In-House?

A team jersey will be provided to all players. When you register on-line, you will order the size for the jersey. In-House Director will order the jerseys per team color and they will be handed to the coaches to distribute to players.  Parents can have the players name and/or number on the back of the jersey for a small fee at Valley Sports but this is not required. Only the Midget level will be assigned a numbered jersey. Parents are responsible for any optional accessories such as: shorts, visors, shoes and socks but these are not required.

If I don’t make Travel can I play for In-House?

Yes, if you are eligible. In-House has three levels which support those that are in 1st – 6th grade. They are Mighty Mite (1st & 2nd), Pee Wee (3rd & 4th) and Midget (5th & 6th).

What is the In-House Jamboree?

The In-House program will start the season off with its annual Jamboree. This is held in May on a Saturday. The Jamboree is lead by Neil Johnson, Varsity Coach, and Varsity Players. It runs about an hour and runs players through several drill stations (batting, throwing, etc). Each age level will have an assigned time. Players will also have a chance to meet team coaches. This is for In-House players only and is not mandatory but highly recommended.

When are the In-House team rosters and schedules posted?

The In-House Director will try to post these on the website by end of April. A mass email will go out to all players letting you know when it has been posted to the website. Practices and games schedules for the weeknight can have varying days depending on field availability and the quantity of teams for the season. In-House Director will try to schedule these on consistent nights for each level.

How do the Travel teams get posted?

After the Travel evaluations are complete, the Travel Director will form the travel teams and coaches. These will be posted on the website and a mass email will go out to all players letting you when it will be posted. Typically it takes 1 ½ - 2 weeks.

What is the In-House Coaches Clinic?

The In-House coaches clinic is designed to help show some of the drills, techniques and tips used within the SGSA for coaching players. Coaches will be placed in small groups and walk through various stations on hitting, bunting, pitching, fielding, etc. Team equipment bags will be distributed to coaches. This is usually scheduled the first week in May.

Are the Winter Clinics for Travel and In-House players?

Yes. This is a great opportunity for a player to brush up on their softball skills before the season starts. The Winter Clinics are setup for pitching, hitting and defense techniques.

Can I request to have my daughter play on the same team as another player?

Travel cannot honor this request. Players are placed on teams based off their evaluation scores.

In-House has tried to honor these requests. SGSA tries to understand your car pooling needs. Parents please understand that teams need to be fair in equal distribution of age levels on each team. If too many requests are made, then this service may not be able to be honored if equal distribution of age cannot be met.

What happens if we can’t work our volunteer shift at the fundraising tournament?

If you do not fulfill your required shift or find a replacement, your volunteer fee check will be deposited.

What are DIBS?

The Dibs volunteer registration system is designed to put you in control and help you locate and choose the volunteer opportunities that best fit your time and schedule. It will be your responsibility to make sure you sign-up and use this system to fulfill your volunteer opportunity hours.  The Dibs system is on a first-come, first-serve basis so the earlier you sign up for your volunteer time slot the more likely you are to get the time/date you would like to work.

When does registration open and how do we register?

Registration will open in January for Travel and In-House.  You will be abel to register on-line from the SGSA website (www.shakopeegirlssoftball.com).  Travel registration is open until mid February and In-House is open until mid March.

If you are interested in coaching either an In-House or Travel team, you will need to fill out the coaching application located on the website.

If you are selected as a coach, you will then need to fill out a Background Check form and provide a copy of your driver's license before you will be able to start coaching.

Who do I contact to become a SGSA Board Member?

What is the volunteer deposit?

The volunteer deposit fee is collected for each participant.  The fundraising tournament has always supported the Shakopee Girls Softball Association (SGSA) for both In-House and Travel league expense such as; field maintenance, insurance, equipment, umpires, etc.  This is not a fundraiser for the Travel league only; it is the type of fundraising SGSA uses that has sanctioned travel teams playing.  Once the volunteer hours have been verified by the Tournament Director your volunteer fee will be destroyed or returned to you at your request. If your hours are not met, SGSA will keep your deposit in lieu of the hours not worked.

Travel volunteer fee is $300.00 per family.  Travel parents are required to work two 3-hour shifts (6 hours total) at the fundraising tournaments.
